| Handful of Rice: General Support |
 |
In Asia, the normal meal for families consists of rice and one other ingredient, which is usually a vegetable. Occasionally there is meat added. When the mother of a Christian family cooks the meal, she will place a handful of uncooked rice in a separate vessel. If there are two meals a day, there are two handfuls set aside. At the end of a period of time, the rice is sold at the marketplace and the proceeds given to their local church or fellowship to support the Lords work.
In most cases, the average wage scale for these countries is less than $600 per year. So, for these families this is truly sacrificial giving considering the poor economic conditions of their nation and culture. However, they report three significant observations:
| (1) |
everyone in the family participates when the giving is practiced this way
all sacrifice equally |
| (2) |
for no apparent reason, no one is ever hungry even though there is less rice
something they cant explain |
| (3) |
they have some rice left over and can give it to the beggars
their sacrifice blesses others and the Lords work |
With this in mind, EPIC developed a Handful of Rice program for those who are blessed by living in the West. A womans handful of rice in Asia is equivalent to about $1.00 in the United States. Thats $3.00 per day since our culture practices eating three meals per day. Therefore, the program suggests that Americans match the sacrifice of Asian believers by giving $100.00 per month...or an equivalent of a handful of rice.
These gifts are designated to the general ministry of EPIC International. Please check here for more information and how to give.
